The Cancellation of the DC Fandome Represents So Many WB Issues

The DC FanDome in 2022 has been canceled, and the reasons for this decision highlight issues that Warner Bros. Discovery must now address.

The DC FanDome will not return in 2022, as one of the side effects issues that Warner Bros. is still dealing with. As the DCEU multiverse took shape, the DC FanDome debuted in August 2020 as an online streaming event showcasing everything new for the DC brand in all forms of media. With a physical San Diego Comic-Con being cancelled at the time due to the COVID-19 pandemic, DC FanDome was a huge success, returning in 2021 and quickly becoming an anticipated annual DC promotional event.

Unfortunately, it was not to be for 2022, as DC FanDome had been cancelled for the year. Warner Bros. Discovery explained the reason for the cancellation in an official statement: “With the return of in-person events, Warner Bros. Discovery is excited to be able to engage with our fans live at numerous comic-cons around the world and will not be scheduling DC FanDome for 2022.” While this indicates that DC properties will be featured at upcoming fan conventions for the rest of 2022, the hard truth is that a 2022 DC FanDome was not likely due to a combination of factors such as the DCEU’s attachment to Ben Affleck’s Batman and numerous movie cancellations and delays.

That is not to say that the DC FanDome will not reopen in 2023 or later. Given the event’s popularity, continuing it would be highly recommended for Warner Bros. Discovery’s post-merger management. Nonetheless, the absence of the DC FanDome will undoubtedly be felt by DC fans in 2022. Here are the reasons why the DC FanDome will not be held in 2022.

Cancelling DC FanDome is a mistake by Warner Bros.

The DC FanDome concept is something that most studios would like to have for their biggest IPs as a weekend streaming event showcasing everything upcoming for the franchise in question. Essentially, DC FanDome is a streaming Comic-Con dedicated solely to everything under the DC banner, in collaboration with Warner Bros.capable of exercising complete creative and financial control over it With the possibility of Henry Cavill returning as Superman, among other developments, Warner Bros Discovery will miss out on a year of the kind of DC-centric fireworks that DC FanDome provides. However, Warner Bros. Discovery’s statement suggests that future DC FanDomes may be reconfigured into physical events akin to San Diego Comic-Con or Disney’s D23 Expo. More immediately, the well from which the DC FanDome could draw in 2022 has run dry.

There’s Nothing To Show With Batgirl Cancelled & Everything Rescheduled

The unprecedented cancellation of Batgirl would make hosting a DC FanDome in the timeframe immediately following it difficult enough, but things have become even more complicated with the rescheduling of every upcoming DC movie until at least 2023, with the exception of Black Adam, which is set to be released in October. Ben Affleck’s appearance in Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom (which could foreshadow a larger Affleck Batman return) appears to at least partially account for the release shuffles, with the film switching back to being released after The Flash movie. However, this, as well as the Arrowverse’s impending conclusion with The Flash season 9, leaving Superman & Lois and Stargirl as the last DC shows on the CW, has left WB Discovery without a fully solidified DC plan to share at DC FanDome. With all of these factors causing as much consternation as curiosity among DC fans, there was simply too little to build a foundation for the DC FanDome in 2022.

The cancellation of the DC FanDome demonstrates how chaotic things are in DC

The loss of the DC FanDome in 2022 is ultimately a result of Warner Bros. Discovery having to do a massive amount of work in organizing their stated 10-year plan for the DCEU, which could not be finalized ahead of a DC FanDome date in September or October. Though Batgirl may still be released in the future, the impact of its cancellation, the rescheduling of the DC film slate, and the potential returns of multiple DCEU cast members have all raised more questions than answers about DC’s future. DC FanDome was bound to be put on hold until Warner Bros. Discovery was fully prepared to flip that equation. All DC fans can do is hope that everything in DC’s future is in place for DC FanDome to return in 2023, whether as an in-person event or a hybridized approach with streaming.
